It's difficult to blame West Ham's poor performance on Mascherano and Tevez being that they have been hardly used.
Mascherano has appeared in only 5 matches in total, 3 as a starter and 2 as a substitute. I don't know his total minutes on the pitch, but they're very low.
Tevez appeared in only 13 matches in total, 7 as a starter and 6 as a substitute. Again, his total minutes have to be low.
Recall that both these players started for Argentina in the 2006 World Cup Finals and played well.
When a team's regular squad is playing the team into relegation, one would think that these two would have been given a bit more playing time -- they are definitely not worse than those who played instead of them.
Makes no sense not to play them, but if that be the case, West Ham should let them go to a better side where -- interestingly -- they will see more playing time.
I agree, it's difficult to understand as Tevez, in particular, looks a decent player
