I've just spent the best part of two days cleaning up my PC. It was infected with the virus of all viruses. I was online to Bullguard support until 3 this morning.

The virus was something called a spyware. It's got me worried becasue my understanding is that it has the ability to hijack important details like bank account numbers/sort codes etc.

Even though it appears to have gone now I'm thinking of changing details with my bank.

I'm not too hot with online security. Do any of you guys know?

According to WHICH there isn't a program that catches all viruses & spyware. They recommend you have an antivirus program such as Norton but also Adaware & Spybot, both of which can be downloaded free.
On a further cautionary note, two months ago someone bought £530 worth of goods through my Paypal account before I noticed it. It took a month to get my money back from Paypal. I've since closed the Paypal account but today had a call from my credit card company saying that someone has bought goods using my card number. They thought the transactions were unusual as they were all through Paypal & I hadn't used this card for any Paypal purchases before. So keep a daily watch on your bank account & look for any unusual activity.

Paypal say that you should change your passwords & security questions on a regular basis. But what you do about credit cards I haven't a clue.

Just looked it up on the net & if someone makes fraudulent purchases with your credit card number then provided you still actually have the card in your possesion you can claim all the money back from the credit card company. If your card is missing then you are liable for the first £50 only.

Here are 10 tips to help insure you're not the victim of thieves and fraudsters:

1.Sign new and replacement cards immediately.

2.Destroy the old cards by cutting them into pieces and shred all old receipts and bills.

3.Don't fax your credit-card number, if possible. Remember, the faxed document could remain in sight at the other end for long periods of time.

4.Don't give your card number over the phone unless you have initiated the call.

5.Destroy any carbon paper if it's used as part of the credit card transaction. Somebody can grab it and forge your signature.

6.Don't respond to any "scam" e-mails requesting your credit card number.

7.Never send your credit card number in an e-mail to anyone!

8.A good option for discouraging theft is to choose a credit card that includes your photo and signature on the card.

9.If you have questions about mistakes or unauthorized items on your statement, you have the right to challenge them.

10.If your card is lost, stolen, or you suspect fraudulent use, call your company's 24-hour hotline immediately to prevent your card from being used as little as possible. The company will block its use, and you won't be responsible for any charges made by thieves.

You'll never deter fraudsters completely. But you can certainly make life as difficult as possible for them.

Download this program from microsoft it is a real time spyware defender...it is very good at ridding your computer of all spyware, it runs all the time (hence real time) and it can be manually activated to scan, on the other hand if you dont want a program you could always download the yahoo toolbar which has a Norton anti-spy built into it and just run that from the toolbar? Either way is effective.

Has any one tried Super Anti spy ware, its a corny name, but it has removed Trojans for me that Spybot, Add-aware and my anti virus program AVG could not touch. Spybot Ad-aware and AVG are good programs in their own right, as most people will know, but only Super anti Spyware would remove a very nasty Trojan that i got hit with.

Another one to remember with Anti Spyware, there is a program called AdWare, which sounds similar to Ad-aware and even looks like it (deliberate so of course) But AdWare is a crafty spyware that cons you in to down loading it, instead of Ad-Aware.

I think lately Nod32 and Kaspersky have been the best in blocking unwanted spyware, malware and viruses. I use hardware firewalls as well to be safe.

Guys don't waist your time and money. I had problems with viruses and tried to clean everything by myself. At the end I spent almost one day and still had problems. Then I found an advert in newspaper of one company based in London and they done the job in the same day and even I didn't moved from the home, because they came to my place, collected my laptop and delivered it back in the evening and I couldn't believe that I spent only £50 for everything. Highly recommend www.Iamnotallowedtospam.co.uk

I just use AVG free and spybot. Both free, and both will get shot of those petty little viruses/spyware/trojans./etc...

To be honest the biggest thing you can do to avoid getting something unwanted is just be smart when on the web and use common sense. Unfortunately common sense isn't as common as it should be when it comes to certain demographics of internet users. There's such a large number of idiotic internet users, that if you even do the smallest amount to protect yourself, most hackers/viruses/etc... will just give up and go for one of the numerous easy targets.

a virus is a self-replicating program that harms other systems. It is malicious in intention, unlike a bug, which is an unintentional flaw in a program.
are you a real live person, or have you failed the turing test?

Use Avg

try registry cleaners, all viruses first setup logs in registry.....find a good registry cleaner then clean your PC...reinstall your operating system and your system will be healed:)
