I'm interested to know what you think about this.. Does an avatar shape the way you think about the person who uses it?

For example, if a female (or someone who pretends to be) uses a pic of an attractive woman, does that make you think that the member using it is attractive?

Or do you base your opinion of them on their posts, and the vibe they give off?

In the past i've used pics of my fave female singers and i found that i got more attention or responses than when using less attractive avatars (ie objects etc).

But with myself, although initially an attractive person in an avatar would get my attention, i tend to focus on what the person has to say, because what they actually look in real life can be totally different. I never look at an avatar and think "wow i have to chat up this person", if you get what i mean.

Without trying to offend anyone, I think i actually find someone more interesting who uses other types of avatars.
Aoife

A members avatar does have some influence on how I imagine them to be, but only about their personality, not their looks.

ice
i judge people by their actions, not the type of pics they like, it can give a false impression,

i have used cartoons, it doesn't mean i am childlike, just that i like colourful pics and my daughter does like to help me choose them biggrin.gif

i have used a sexy pic, it doesn't mean i am in a sexy mood just that i liked the pic,

i have used just words when i thought they were funny, doesn't mean i am agreeing with what they say.

i guess it is a personal thing, how you choose to see people biggrin.gif

I agree, i'm the same. YOu can get an idea of what a person is like, and their interests, from what they choose

Exactly. I think some people can be fooled though and just assume that thats how you look. Not saying its a bad thing for the member who uses it biggrin.gif

Ah now with that, i think i would assume that you DO agree with the words that you choose, cos if you didnt agree with them, then you wouldnt choose them..?

I tend to use my own pictures, unless I find something amusing that I want to use instead biggrin.gif
If people like them they like them if they don't they don't! Doesn't bother me!

let me see if i explain it a bit more,
finding a set of words funny, and feeling what they mean are too seperate things, (in my mind at least)

you get more of an idea how people are by how they post, some people use cartoons or pictures some their own photos.i use my own photos, dont really know why just do.i use photos i like ie as a kid cause i think it looks cute or funny or when im having a laugh as thats my general mood/personality.i cant say that posting a good looking picture makes people more willing to reply to posts as i dont have a good looking picture to place on avatar. laugh.gif

if nothing else my cute baby pics prove that just cause people have cute kids, doesnt amount to cute/good looking adults. laugh.gif i think beer ,work and parties have taken their toll now.i probably would have a funky computer designed avatar if i was capable of making them.

I'm saying that some people seem to assume that the avatar gives an idea of what the member looks like, but i doubt thats often the case
whatabeauty
I dont look like mine trust me, and I dont like it sloppy and wierd, I just liked the avatar smile.gif , It also describes a prettier, fluffier, more girly and interesting person than I am , my 'filthy girl' sig also describes a more interesting person than what I am, its glittery and shiny and looks like I'm a girly girl, I can be but generally I'm not. the quote from the snow patrol song, under my 'filty girl' sig describes me alot of the time, and describes my feelings

I Like to see attractive or unusual Avatars, but I never think a person looks like their Av, even if they claim it's a Pic of them. I am very wary of judging a person on what they write too, as they may be quite different IRL from what they are like on the Net smile.gif
easylife
I take avatars as a first impression, untill you get to read peoples post and decide upon the poster, the avatars are the only thing you can judge them on.

Anyway, I think they are over rated, at least at the mo. laugh.gif

I think your right, I drive at 5 mph over the speed limit, and take my seatbelt off 2 streets before home wacko.gif

I think your choice of avatar says a lot about you. It's the first thing people see when reading your posts.

If someone had an avatar with 'Sex God' or 'Porn Star' in red flashing letters (bear with me on this) what impression would that give you? I'd say that they were anything but and they probably had difficulty meeting members of the opposite sex.

I think people who use photos of themselves as avatars are generally more open and honest (assuming the photo they use is of themselves)

I'm sure psychologists and sociologists would have a field day studying this sort of thing

It would make good reading. Trouble is the cynic in me says that anyone who did read such a tome would immediately pick an avatar that represented everything that was funny, sexy, honest......and rich. wink.gif

Harlequin memories.........

I can claim the title of the first to use a photo of themselves here at BUKF as an avatar. We were discussing pretty much the same points as here and now, though the thread is long gone.

I remember about three or four of us all hounding "Maddy" to show her face, she did for a short time too. It seemed like a big event then. Two of us actually had faces!!!!!! laughing.gif

Then we got the members photo gallery going and it doesn't seem such a big deal now, but it is still nice to know who you are talking to.

I don't believe there is any connection between a person's avatar and whether that person is open and honest.

I enjoy looking at other peoples avatars regardless what they are. I don't judge nobody on which advartar that person has on profile.
