Is there a way to increase hits to my website, without having to resort to spamming or signing onto programs which claim to e-mail 150000 people your website.
Are there any websites out there with huge volumes of traffic where I could get decent exposure without resorting to cheap and tack measures.

Ther is no simple explanation to your question. It is called Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and it all involves whether your site's URL comes up on the first page of the Search Engine listings - when someone is looking for a service or a product by using the relevant key phrases. It is a specialist area where a lot of things have to be taken into consideration such as the choice of site keywords, meta tags, keyword rich content, links, structure & navigation, PPC campaigns, etc. etc.
