before i start, if you can not say anything nice do not say anything

living wills are they a good idea?

ponder this, you are well but after a routine medical examination, you are told you have a terrible illness, you will lose both your body and mind,

do you

write a living will stating at which point your life will not be worth saving, saving your family from anymore heartache

let the illness run it's course leaving the final end in the hands off your doctors and family

or something else?

I've not been diagnosed with anything and am fine, yet I've got a living will - you can write them at any time. I think they're a great idea. I don't want to get involved in an accident and some over eager doctor persuade my next of kin that it's a 'good idea' to keep me on life support while in a coma for an indefinite period of time, or something of that sort.

It's better to right one before you get diagnosed with something that's going to kill you, because at least it avoids the charge that you're somehow 'not thinking rationally'. If you change your mind at any time, they're easily revoked.

Living wills are a good thing for my money. They sort out what could be a very emotionaly trying time for relatives, and resolve any conflicts before they happen. You have a responsibility to your relatives and loved ones to take away decisions that directly involve your demise...it's your life...you decide when, where and what happens to you should you become "Non compis mentis" (?)...Don't leave it to them...it's not fair.

I had cause to make sure mine was up to date recently. It may seem a morbid thing to consider when you are fit and well, but it's a necessary thing to keep in mind.

We are all mortal.

I haven't written one on this subject, I have the normal will in place, but my family are all aware that I wouldn't want to be kept going if in a vegative state or terminal and I have donor cards. But perhaps it is a good idea to have it in writing as well, as having seen the fall out that happens between families over a normal will or lack of one in place, the more that is in writing the better, including how I would like to be treated in a severe medical situation.

it is nice to see that those who have posted are mostly of one mind, it is a shame this topic is so hard for so many to talk about, how else are our family mean't to know our wishes,
i would come back and haunt anyone who, tried to keep me alive when my time is up laugh.gif
