I don't know if you guys have this same campaigne in your country, but I'd like to know what you think of the one running in Australia at the moment.

This is what's on our ciggarette packets at the moment, I want some feedback on whether anyone thinks this campaign is over the top or justisfied. (Remembering though tobacco is a legal substance.)

Can't give you any facts yet other than I've heard talk of them putting images on cigarette packets over here.

Personally I think they'll just make the packets collectable items, kids'll be trying to get the full set.

I think it's justified... whether or not it's effective is another matter though

i have seen the tv campaign other coutrys have used before and i find these images less shocking than them, however i must agree with helium i also do not think they will be effective. as a smoker i know the risks i take with each cig i smoke. i have researched the facts looked at the pictures and even worse cared for someone dieing of lung cancer, i have tried to stop and will continue trying until i can

the target of any anti-smoking campaign should be to prevent ppl from starting, not on the cig packets as most smokers are well aware of the risks

I am a none smoker
But if they stop people smoking they lose a lot of tax income.
so that means more tax on cars, beer, and maybe a tax on
our internet or mobil phones.
Blair will tax anything he can.

I can't see any reason why they shouldn't put such pictures on cigarettes...

Perhaps cars should be sold with road carnage pictures on them

Given the numbers of people they kill a year, that might not be such a bad idea

These pics will have some small impact, but people will get used to them eventually. I think that the best way to do it is to only have the pics on every few months to keep the shock value intact.

I've recently kicked the habit (Week 9 off the cigs for me!!!!) but even when I was a smoker I wouldn't have cared one bit about images like this on cigarette packets. Probably would have made a good conversation point amongst fellow smokers (and the opportunity for a bit of black humour). That's the way things are.

Thats my point exactly Dace, I used to smoke (7 months without now) and all the adverts and the like had no effect. It is down to the individual whether he she gives up. Everyone knows its bad for you, and dont need reminding every couple of minutes

I don't think anyone believes that however big the warning, or however many pictures they put on the packet, it'll actually prevent smoking. After all, to really see the warning, most people will have to buy the packet in the first place!

Deaths from cigarettes aren't accidental in the same way that they are from cars, or kitchens: in fact, it's a statistical likelihood that smokers are more at risk at .... etc., etc.: everyone knows it, as has been said. If cars had proportionally the same effect on the population as fags, no one would drive. The fact that people continue to smoke is where the addiction bit comes in.

So if they want to put pissy messages on the packets, even if they are next to no good, at least Government will feel it's doing something about one of the more preventable causes of health problems in this country (so they're happy), a message that can be safely ignored by smokers: so they're also happy. Everybody wins

I am yet to be convinced that all deaths said to be related to smoking are in fact that. Someone gets sick with Emphisemia and are asked if they smoked, then they have emphisemia from smoking. It doesn't seem to matter about all the other variables. Like the bloke who worked in the coal mines half his life. Or grew up around factories spewing toxins into the air. Or lived in a smog filled city all his life.

Someone gets sick with Empesemia and hasn't smoked is told they got it from someone who smoked around them . If that dosen't pan out then it's from smoke from somewhere they frequented.

(In fact when the huge court case surrounding the Asbestos case began in Australia a great many victims who smoked were told it was a smoking related illness they had and not an Asbeatos illness)

It's all bullshit to me. Yes I believe people die from smoking too much (but I'm talking two packs a day kind of smoking.) but if big industry want to deflect any causes of death from the crap they have put into our air or the number of nuclear weapons that have gone off and spewed shit into the atmosphere then you have to pick something that is widespread and also has the same kind of toxins they are feeding us everyday. And if Governments were really about protecting our health then maybe they'd only allow non addictive ciggarettes to be sold . It's only since the 70's that smokes have been addictive and have had addictive chemicals in them. It used to be just tabacco now they have this list

there's over 599 ingredients all aproved chemicals that go into all our foods your eating and drinking them everyday. I'm not going to post them all but you get my drift.



These chemicals are also in the air of industrial sites and major cities, so the next time you think about not having a ciggarette get into your brand new car and smell the nice new smell of the interior. You've just inhaled at least 25 of the toxins seen above. Btu don't worry because before you got into the car you probably ate a few dozen of them as well.

the funny thing about the quit smoking ads is everytime I see one I have a smoke . They actually remind me of ciggarettes.

im a non smoker, and recently went to the bodyworks exhibition in london, if i was a smoker the lung section would have put me off. they show a healthy lung and then a smokers lung and it's horrible, all black and gloopy, in fact they have a clear plastic box next to the smokers lung where you can leave your cigarettes if you want to LOL

if youre travelling by car we found a great place to park, theres an ibis hotel just down the road from earls court and we parked in their car park, it only cost us £4 instead of £18 to park in the official earls court place

Earl's Court used to be (maybe still is) a suburb of Sydney - there were more bloody Aussies there than in all 'Strylia.

I'm doing pretty well off the cigs.....I think it's nearly 10 or 11 weeks and I ain't had a patch on for about 2 weeks. I still think of smoking now and again, but I reckon I've cracked it.

yes it is interesting. the guy who does it was on the telly last night doing a live autopsy, makes you realise how much you abuse your body when you see it in the ....ummm... flesh!!!!
