I remember the era of the album...and its sometimes fantastic artwork. To me it seems as if the era of the cd has killed it off a little...this could just be my own perception, and an errornous one at that.

So I'm starting an album cover thread. Link us to an album cover that blew your mind (often more than the music).

I'll start with one of my favorites from the "Yes" albums Rodger Dean did some superb stuff and this is a favorite of mine. As I remember the covers and find the links I'll add more.

The Beatles Revolver was one of the first albums that really made me look at and apretiate art work on an album cover. And I think your right hq, since cd the artwork has suffered, just because of the size of cd's really

The MP3 and the iPod can't help much, either.

I agree with Revolver - and I'd also nominate the The White Album, which not only suits perfectly the pared down sound of a lot of that album after Sgt Pepper but I think which was quite unique in its simplicity that only can be imitate - eg Metallica, Jayzee.

Nirvana's Nevermind cover is quite a provocative one.

I remember seeing this cover for the first time in a record shop in Deptford high street in the late 70's, and it blew my young brain away, the dayglow pink on the yellow background, just screamed out look at me smile.gif

The artwork associated with sgt Pepper/Yellow submarine etc. Is a subject all on its own.

Anther one of Roger Deans was the Motown Chartbuster album, nobody knows why they chose him to do this cover - except that he was the most sought after artist at the time.

I remember this one well, it seems tame now but at the time we just hadn't seen anything like it and it was many a persons first glimpse of fantasy art.

Remember seeing and loving this cover as a kid, and the album was great too

Looking at Harelquin's posts on this, I think it's the seventies that took to the album cover to its peak.

I'd totally agree with that statement, yet with the leaps forwards as regards art technology and the computer, you'd think that now would be the heyday.

I knew someone that had that as a poster up on their wall. And I had the album too...I wore the grooves out of the thing.

Prog Metal band Tool are leading the way in album cover innovation.

On Lateralus the pages are printed onto clear plastic and each page shows the different levels of anatomy for a human form. No lyrics or anything boring like that...

And here is their new album, 10,000 Days. The cover has two funny lenses on it and the inside has stereographic 3D images that you need the funny glasses to look at.

I can't find a decent picure of the cover with the glasses bit so I'l have to use my digi camera when I get the chance.
