Margret Weis & Tracy Hickman (Counts as one because they write together)

*sharp intake of breath*

I'm not too sure about that. You'll need to get a copy of leaflet BUKF021a ("Changing Criteria For Posting on a Particular Topic - Exceptions"), and fill out form BUKF020. Send a copy to me (as starter of the topic), another to Biggles, and a copy to the Moderators collectively. You'll also need to provide identification (2 pieces) and proof of address (2 pieces, one of which may be the same as the piece of ID), as per BUKF Membership Regulations: A Handbook, with regard to Chapter 2, Section 3, paragraph D. If you want proof of receipt, you'll need to fill out form BUKF121. We'll then endeavour to reply to that with 28 days. If you need to be ripped off by an expensive telephone call to somewhere in India, where out Call Centre staff will do their level best to be obstuctive, you can call the BUKF HelpLine on 0870 9929090. Their current rendition of Vivaldi's Four Seasons needs to be heard to be believed.

For the moment, your willful negligence of Procedure will be overlooked until the necessary paperwork is put in order as it's obvious you've not too familiar with some recent administrative changes. Other Members please note. biggrin.gif

Bloody beaurocracy!!! I assume these forms come in triplicate for security reasons (and so they can get mislayed three times), the phone call costs £2 per minute, Vivaldi's Four seasons is the 57 minute extended version (which is then interrupted three quarters of the way through with an "our operators are currently busy, please hold the line" before starting again!!!???) and to top it all off the operators are unsympathetic and will tell me that it's not their problem anyway???????

Poets count, btw.

If non-fiction counts (which I now see that it does), I would add Edward Gibbon and Winston Churchill.

My understanding is that the list is limited to writers in the English language and does not include writers in other languages translated to English.

I'm not sure where you picked that idea up from - certainly my original post just says "five writers". However, to be one hundred per cent crystal clear on this, the word "writer"

*excludes no known language or dialect living (eg Swahili), dead (eg Sanskrit) or artificial (eg Klingon).

*covers all known writing styles (eg rhyming pentameter, manga), genres (eg sci-fi), formats (eg journalism), and media (eg books, internet, stones).

You may also use the "Dace Exception", which is where two or more writers who are usually known as writing or having written together constitutes a single choice.

I trust this clears up any remaining difficulties unsure.gif

I know this thread is ancient but I have some catching up to do LOL

This is a toughy but I think I'd go for (not in order):

Stephen Donaldson
Michael Moorcock
Edgar Rice Burroughs
Terry Pratchett
Philip Pullman

...and Garth Nix (DOH! I cheated!)

Even tougher than that! A few months back I was interviewed on BBC Radio Cambs about my first novel. Then, a few weeks ago they invited me back to do a 'desert siland disc' feature (which airs on the 30th October if you're in the area). I have to pick THREE favourite CD tracks to take with me for play on their drive-time program!
I think I've changed my mind about 40 times since then - still don't know my final three and its only 2 weeks to the show!

As of today it is Robert Plant "All the Kings Horses", Scott Stapp "The Great Divide" and Yes "Leave It"
...the chances of thoise being the three that I take with me are pretty remote though rolleyes.gif
