I use ad-aware and it is very good - as biggles says "it is free." Just type in Ad-aware and download. So simple even a baby could do it.

Of course if a baby used it then it must be a very intelligent baby. A bit like me when I was a baby. But that was last week - how times have changed so fast!!!!

Also very good is Microsoft Anti-Spyware which should still be free in beta version. I use both that and Adaware, and I'd say that the Microsoft one is a bit better.

Microsoft Anti-Spyware is better for one MAJOR reason - it runs as an agent and stays in your Task Bar so protects you all the time rather than Ad-Aware which you need to manually run.

AdAware does fine more things in a scan but these are not harmful things - it's just being paranoid.

Download it here

I hate having to say that a Microsoft Product is good - but.... it is!

I use Microsoft Anti-Spyware and Spybot Search & Destry. I've found that neither package is infallable, but both together clean up any nasty infections. I regularly scan my system and I've been totally clean for months. Both pieces of software start up with windows and run in the background, and neither uses much of you system resourses up.

Spybot S&D is free from Here. Just look around and it'll direct you to the download server.

All the free programs will cause you trouble in the end, you can't expect anything that good for nothing, if you don't get problems you get loads of pop ups driving you crazy, they have to pay for these programs somewhere.

In the end its better to spend a bit of money and buy PC-Cillin from Trend, it will cost about £45 for the first year, but is well worth the money.

I have had it on for about 10 months now and surf the net where others fear to tread with no problems.

Wish I'd know about this when I first started, it would have saved me no end of bother.

Between McAfee (Which I payed £25 for), Spybot S&D and Microsoft Anti Spyware (both free) I've NEVER had any serious problems EVER. At the most all I've ever had is a couple of minor threats which were sorted out immediatley and quarantined without causing any problems.

When I surf the net I get a pop up once in a blue moon from sites that forse me to have them (like my ISP's email logon which I can't avoid with any pop up blocker).

To make a spyware programme worthwhile, I'd say it has to be one that gets regular updates, without them I would have thought the programme would be redundant in a very short space of time.
