Enthusiastic amateurs. For example, Bill Oddie wittering on about the wildlife during Springwatch. He's no professional zoological training at all, but is given his own program. Ken Clarke and his jazz show. Michael Palin and that artist he was following around; Jonathan Dimbleby and his landscapes of Britain program.

Nothing against "enthusiastic amateurs" per se, but the fact that BBC or whoever gives them a program, not because they're an the best qualified to do do the program (they're not), but merely because they are better known for doing something else.

The latest thing is to get up my nose is John Simpson and the book he's read (like I care). It's not even any sort of literatary criticism of any sort at all, but passages from frigging books he's read and liked! I've never heard so much pointless radio in my life! The point is, I guess, is that I could do it! We all could sit behind a mike, and say, "I liked this book. I read it when I left school" and get someone to narrate a lengthy passage! And how much is Simpson getting for that? A lot more than what I'm getting now, I'll bet
