Well... why don't you stop her?

I'v only just noticed she's been smoking in the house.
But out of curiosity what would you do ??what would you recommend that i do?

As a single parent I bought up four children on my own. Three girls (two were stepchildren) and one son. For a start I wouldn’t have let it get that far. The only reason we don’t see it is because we give our children too much rope. Sherlock Holmes once said “We see but we don’t observe.” And I agree on that. We don’t really see our children because we are involved in our own lives. Thus you get things like smoking etc. Always expect the unexpected and you will catch it before it starts.

However, you are asking me what I would do in your situation (as it has happened). Once you have let it happen you’ve now got to stop it. Doing what she has done should mean you have to come down heavy on her. Withdraw her privileges like going out, pocket money etc and give her a good talking to. And then observe her, watch her moves and see if she is trying to restore her trust with you.

The other question is; if she is doing this and you only just found out what the else is she doing that you don’t know about? What about her school behaviour etc? I would look in every corner and if she moans then tell her that she has abused her trust. Show her/ teach her that what she has done was very bad indeed.

You will find that most of society’s ill is because parents haven’t really got a clue what there children are doing and that they are running wild (I am not suggesting for one minute that you are one of these parents).

For the record; my youngest daughter is at Cardiff University, my son, after college, went to Ireland to live. One of my step daughters went on to university and is now in the film industry and my other daughter is married and also living in Ireland. As they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. I made sure it could never happen. I nipped any problems in the bud before it bloomed into a disaster.

Umm yes ,where do i start!
Its tough bringing up a child on your own let alone four of them and it looks as though you have done a very good job of it too.
I have also brought up my daughter alone and we have had some difficult times which could have been a facter in how she is now.I have been soft with her in the past because of this reason but now i see it wasnt doing her any good by being this way with her.
I must point out that i have never wanted her to smoke and have told her this a zillion times but still she does it,i have been told that if she wants to smoke let her smoke ?by a family member but there is no way she will smoke in the house.
She gets no pocket money and i'v also tried taking things away from her .
I will have to stop her paper round job ,maybe that might make her realise.

You are right. Thinks are not always that easy. And it has not always been as easy as I might have suggested for myself. I have no doubt that you have your head screwed on right and you WILL DO the right thing. Bringing up kids is not easy, bringing them up on your own is an added burden. I hope your punishment works and she learns an important lesson. You have an extra burden, as I said, and you don’t want a daughter who complicates things more.

Good luck and I hope it works. If she follows your example she can’t go much wrong (your attitude).

ps mine also did a paper round job. Which I eventually took over. If I can make a suggestion? Instead of stopping her doing the paper round how about she pays for the damage and a bit more for what she has done. Give her a chance to at least redeem herself. However, if she doesn't learn then stop it.

Now that will be telling. No I don't mind. My daughter was born in 84 which.... erm, makes her 21 (this year I think. I know, that is awful, not knowing... but you can always put it down to a bad memory which comes with old age.) If she is now twenty one and I am now twenty one then that makes me a foetus when she was born. Does that help?

Yep...youngest of 5!! Eldest is 16!! and when he was born I still had kids of my own at home and was not ready to be a granny at all !! But I don't think they hold it against me, don't know any different!!.....I have enjoyed the youngest tho!! He is just great!!!

There are many beautiful granny ladies around. And I have no doubt that you are in that category . And I am also sure that Ribs is also in that category, as well. I can always tell a beautiful sexy young granny lady.
