Being fed up with my boiler breaking down a few times now, i've only in about the last few mins signed up to British Gas HomeCare, which gives you this. Basically, its like insurance for your boiler. You pay out £13 each month and for that you get a free service each year, and free call outs if it breaks down.

Sounds great, doesnt it? Doesnt it? I hope so, seeing as i've just signed up. But i googled and found other forums with not so great opinions. This is a typical one

I used to work for BG and if you want some advice cancel the homecare contract. It is overpriced. Get a reputable service engineer to look after your system. BG are forever condemming perfectly good systems, so as to sell you another

On the other hand though, this person has the same way of thinking that i had when i signed up

I took out HomeCare 6 months ago as house now about 7 years old and no previous services done. Took a while to get first inspection visit for Service. Shortly after the Control Unit needed replacing and was done swiftly and the engineer redid the service properly this time! A couple of weeks ago the expansion vessel needed replacing. I'm happy and quids in at the moment. It's an insurance deal at the end of the day and avoids unplanned big payouts when things don't work.

I have a seven day cooling off period if i wanna cancel. I'm kinda thinking maybe i shouldnt have signed up. Any thoughts?

Phew!

That's a real can of worms. The real problem is the tech as regards boilers is changing all the time, and only specialist know what is going on. Mind you, the big companies are the ones initiating the changes.

Yes BG will look after you, but they will condem your boiler and ask you to fit the latest model -making it easier for them- and the'll make you pay premium rates too for the work.....but it will WORK and keep on working.

The real question is how much you want to pay. You'll not get a Rolls Royce for moped prices...you just won't.

My boilers only 7 years old so they couldnt even try to condem it yet could they? I just need to avoid shelling out lots of unexpected money and this seems the way to avoid it.. i think..?
