Do you know the name of the virus? that way we could google it and something out there should give advice.. or is "antivirus 2008 xp" the name of it? Maybe if you can get into safe mode, you could do a virus scan and see if that helps

Ok i've googled it and i'm guessing that the virus name is actually "antivirus 2008 xp" as i have found lots about it. Mainly this one, which i have pasted below.

XP Antivirus 2008Published in March 6th, 2008 Posted by admin in Malware, Manual removal instructions, Removal Tools, Rogue anti-spyware, Spyware reviewsDescription of XP Antivirus 2008 and consequences of its residing on your PC

New extremely dangerous release of XPAntivirus known as XP Antivirus 2008 or Xp Antivirus Protection is now rated high among the most widespread and harmful threats infecting computers in the Web. Mass mailing is the most popular tool used to propagate this malware, though it does not mean common methods of penetration like inclusion in free for download codec and unauthorized downloading are out of use.
XP Antivirus 2008 is very similar to previous release of XP Antivirus 2008 in terms of advertising, it is obvious that vendors of both XPAntivirus releases attempted to attract clients (web-site visitors) by same tricks with reliable prelapsarian naivety of official web-site design; simple general explanations and luck of bright colors with modest but obvious references to Windows XP trade attributes may be treated as a proof.
XP Antivirus 2008 though similar in lots of traits to XPAntivirus previous release demonstrates much less moderate habit after its trial version installation in users PC. Subject to a particular case, XPAntivirusPotection drives users crazy by continuous alerts or causes slow computer problem with errors in files rendering up to complete system crush and some hard drive disc clusters defects.

Automated Removal Instructions for Antivirus XP 2008 using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

Print out these instructions as we will need to close every window that is open later in the fix.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or MBAM, from the following location and save it to your desktop:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Download Link

Once downloaded, close all programs and Windows on your computer, including this one.

Double-click on the icon on your desktop named Download_mbam-setup.exe. This will start the installation of MBAM onto your computer.

When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process. Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing, make sure you leave both the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware checked. Then click on the Finish button.

MBAM will now automatically start and you will see a message stating that you should update the program before performing a scan. As MBAM will automatically update itself after the install, you can press the OK button to close that box and you will now be at the main program as shown below.

Hey scorpy,
I didn't think my message was posted last night because of this virus. It was a rouge program called Antivirus 2008 xp. It just took over everything, internet browser, desktop. I'm pretty good with these kind of things, never ever had any serious problem with any viruses, even when there's been a big flap about them.
This was probably the most vicious thing I've seen on my computer, I thought my monitor was going to a 360 degree spin, it was that possesed. I got up this morning, and booted into safe mode, tracked down the files and deleated them, but it was still playing havok with my PC.
Finally my sister's boyfreind come over and gave windows vista, I installed it, and eveything is working fine now. phew!

So beware of a rougue program called Antivirus 2008 xp, it will seriously screw with you.

Thanks for the info
J
