Emissary of the Bee
Hello there, fine buccaneers of the interweb. I'm looking to build a website.
Nothing to extensive, just a single page with some images and maybe 'popy outy' box’s.
All very basic.
But then. my knowledge of website building is more so! So - I’ve come here, to enquire on how i go about building one, if anyone would lend me their sagely advice; or maybe even hands on help me.

Many thanks for all those interested and biscuits by the entrance.

There's some basic tutorials here.

It's not that hard once you get the codes in the right places. (years since I messed about with webpages though)

Well - I’ve been using Dreamweaver recently in a vain attempt to get to grips with it – but it must be over 2 years since I last touched it.
And I wasn’t very good at it to begin with -.-'.

I'll just throw up a moc up image of what I’m going with this just so its eaiser to understand when I start having problems with specifics (it is a one page website after all – so it shouldn’t, in theory be to hard).

Effectively I need it just to act as an online portfolio (not as in 'look! i can build websites! - but as - look at my pretty pictures) to send around, so it is – rather – important that I get it done.

Give us a link, let's see what we can do to help maybe.

Will do, first of course i actually have to make the graphics and whatnot!

Speaking of which - pixel wise, what are the standard dimensions for a web skin? I mean one that fully cover the screen.
Obviously some monitors will stretch it and others will shrink it, but on average what dimensions should I be looking to do it at?

(Thanks for the intrest mr harlequin smiles.gif )

You sir; are a bouncing, cuddly ball of information and I don’t pay you enough.
That’s a great help – now at least I can get on with doing what I know how to do first!

It often helps online if a few chip in. Wading through google sites for the info as oppose to adverts can be a real chore.
Glad to help. cool.gif

Ok – so today I decide to sit down and whip up a moc webskin – its not finished by a long shot (and shrunk to fit on the forum page of course!)– as there’s no text (!); there will be more boxes going down the left hand side, and few more doodles on the actual page itself (I’m toying with a big hand out of the ground) but you get the basic idea.

Right – so you have this single page – no scrolling up or down – just BLAM – page.
If I give it a full white outline – I can having it sit in the middle of the screen instead of being stretched – which would be nice really.
Stretching makers Jesus cry.

Now: when you click on the thumbnails – this will happens.

I know – snazzy, you get to see the artwork the thumb belongs too. And this link (http://www.digitalia.be/software/slimbox) apparently explains how to do it!

Now what I would REALLY like to do is have a sign saying ‘bio & contact details’ over the siren- and when you click on it – a bubble comes from the bottom of the screen with it on (well ok, something bubble shaped anyway), but I fear that would involve flash.

Right – now this is all well and good – dandy even – except. I spent around 3 hours today on dreamweaver – and I’m not sure how to even make a page! (a tutorial simply helped confuse matters >.>).

So yes – uhum. I don’t know what to say.

You seem to be doing ok. And the more effort you put in, the more you'll learn. I've never heard of "dreamweaver" so you've lost me there.

I'll look at the link, but I suspect you know more than I do.

[edit] I've just looked at that slimbox. Niiiice !!.

I'm way out of my depth now.

Ahhh! You can’t leave me on my own!?
Graphics I can do but anything else >.>.

Dreamweaver is basically a swankier Microsoft Frontpage (which I think they changed the name of a wile ago, sneaky). Basically, a website builder for dummies.
It appears I’m a little to dumb though >.> as it all looks like a garbled mess to me!

I can help you search for help, but that's about it. I remember a bit about basic coding but that was years ago, and I don't know what you are using now.

No. I just responded to Em's posting and helped with searches. I'll keep helping with searches, but to understand what he's doing I'd have to see the base coding and figure it out. Tha page I had was a geocities page which I took apart and re-did.
That was all just a matter of working out where the <b> </b> went and suchlike. Em is way beyond that.

If you right click and "view source"...thats the sort of stuff I messed with.
