Time to let it go empathy.gif Time for a new one sorry.gif
Rach227
6 years IS a long time lol, I mean we need a new (it's so slow!) and we've had ours for 4 years and a bit
Scorpio
I reckon trying starting up in safe mode and doing virus scans might help
aboutblank1976
Average lifetime for a hard drive is 5 years. Might not be a complete new pc - just a new hard drive unless you can seek out a virus in safe mode as scorpio suggests.

This link might help you Andy if you dont know how to get into safe mode. Safe Mode

ill sell you a new one smiles.gif

This happened to my son's computer a couple of weeks ago. Safe Mode made no difference in his case, the computer just looped exactly the same. I fixed it by doing a re-format. It was a software problem and not related to hardware at all... the result of his visiting too many dodgy sites in my opinion. fraidso.gif

If Safe Mode and virus checks don't help, I'd probably recommend a re-format for you too but you'd lose all your files on the drive... I guess it depends whether or not you've got everything backed up.

Six years is a long time in terms of computers but it all depends what you use it for. If it's mostly just browsing the Internet then you won't particularly see any benefits by upgrading, the speed is related more to your connection. But if you wanted to do video editing or play the latest games etc then it would be worth considering, you'd notice a difference when editing your pictures too. So the question is, other than the latest problem, were you happy with the way your computer was working before?

Dodgy as in downloads, cracks and cheats... the kind of site buried under 3 million tons of adverts, each one leaving a tracking cookie in it's wake. And of course that reference was made about my son's surfing habits, not Andrew's. unsure.gif

Thanks les i've been at thisfor 9 hours todayi have the free AVG
and its getting some of them i have been using Spybot Search and Destroy
as well it got 119 out of 124 but its the 5 thats left that are the bad ones
i can't restore the computer it won't give me a date before today
i have the chance of getting an older machine windows 98 i might have to take it
i hope that i will still be able to get on here

You could try HijackThis... the linked site has a quick start guide to help you use it.

I wouldn't know which of the programs it finds you should delete, but I'd go to one of those forums and ask for help. I first saw it on one of the MSN Groups... that was a few years ago though so I can't be certain.

It's a shame you've got to miss this comp, but hopefully you can be up and running for the next one. yes2.gif
